Hope and optimism are infectious and can bring in a spark of change
that can brighten our future. I have noticed and experienced such an
inspiration moment that has left a deep life changing positive
influences on my psyche. I was an avid swimmer in school who took part
in various swimming competitions and had brought laurels to my school.
Just after my board exams I slipped and fractured my toe and
dislocated my ankle so I was confined to the bed. My swimming practice
took a beating. This was a very serious issue for me. As I needed to
swim well for clearing the swimming trials for my college admission.
Otherwise I would have to settle for a correspondence course. With a
broken foot I was in excruciating pain and the prospects of my taking
part in the swimming admission trials looked bleak. This sounded like
a death knell for my career prospects as without clearing the trials
no good college would give me admission in the sports quota.
So as soon as I began to move and walk with the help of crutches I
headed to the swimming pool. All along the way I was cursing my bad
luck and misfortune for having a broken foot. The injury had made me
very irritable and depressed causing my spirits to be very low.
Although I was not an ace swimmer but I could boast of some masterful
breast strokes and loved swimming. I had been introduced to the world
of swimming by my father who had taken me to a nearby swimming pool
during my vacations when I was quite young and still in school. My
father taught me the basics of swimming and helped me in my initiation
to swimming and sports. My father was my hero and I looked upon him
with great respect and awe. Now he became not only my hero but also my
friend and guide. This special bonding with my father made me look up to
him and I always wanted to live up to his expectations and not
disappoint him in any way. Proving myself at the college swimming
trials would have been the golden opportunity for doing so. When I
reached the pool I saw others swimming and practicing their strokes.
At first I was a bit apprehensive but then I gathered my nerves
together and told myself that I can do better as I always thought of
myself as a naturally gifted swimmer. As soon as I stepped into the
pool the familiar feel of the water made me forget my apprehension and
pain and with powerful strokes I started to cover the length of the
pool. Then I felt someone swim past me with a lot of gusto and speed.
I had taken only a few strokes and this person had already reached the
other end of the pool. I thought this must be a big champion. When I
looked in the direction of this person I was surprised to see a short
girl pulling out of the water and when our eyes met she had the smile
of a winner and why not, she had defeated me. Then my eyes fell on her
hand which had a big scary scar mark and a thumb was missing. Further
I noticed that she had only one leg. By this time I had reached her
end of the pool and tried to pull my myself out of the pool with great
difficulty. Seeing me in discomfort and pain she smilingly extended
her hand to give me support. I was stunned by this gesture by this
complete stranger specially since she had a missing limb. Upon coming
out of the pool she introduced herself to me. Seeing the expression of
disbelief she told me her story as to how while swimming in a river a
crocodile had attacked her and chewed away her foot and thumb. Due to
this accident she had been left with only one foot and lost one thumb..
Yet I found her to be so full of life , hope and optimism. That chance
encounter in turn filled me with hope and optimism for the future. It
taught me to be happy and not crib about what I have lost. This way I
could focus my energy and talents to succeed and achieve my goals in the
future.Needless to say this new found hope and optimism gave me success at the trials and I was selected and got admission to the college of my choice
